There are two main types of skin cancer: malignant melanoma which is less common but more serious; and non-melanoma skin cancer, which is very common but not so serious.
In 2009 in the UK, 2,633 people in the UK died from skin cancer. Around 2,081 from malignant melanoma and 552 from non-melanoma skin cancer.
Skin cancer is common and you must protect yourself against it, regardless of your skin type is fair or dark, you need to protect yourself with sun cream.
Like most cancers, skin cancer is more common with increasing age, but malignant melanoma is dispropotionately high in younger people. More than one third of all cases of malignant melanoma occur in people under 55.
