Suffering from Dry Skin?

What is Dry Skin and how do I know if I have it?

Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age and gender.

With our cold winter and hot summer, skin can become dry. Our hands are not immune to the effects of this and they can end up being sore, cracked, or even bleed. While there is no one cure-all moisturiser that will work for everyone, there are some lotions that will help your skin to heal quicker and provide relief.

Dry skin is a common condition that can be caused by many factors and can affect anyone, regardless of age and gender.  Dry skin alone is not a serious medical condition, but it can cause discomfort and embarrassment. It can be caused by the environment, health conditions, or some medications. Dry skin can also be caused by diet, such as consuming too much coffee, sugar, salty foods, refined carbs and alcohol.

Dry skin may not always be noticeable to the naked eye, but it will feel rough and tight to the touch. Dry skin may be scaly or prone to forming shallow cracks. The skin can feel itchy and uncomfortable and may lead to the development of other skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. Unlike the smooth and healthy appearance of normal skin, dry skin lacks moisture and may look dull and flaky.

Can I do anything about Dry Skin?

The good news is that there are a number of remedies available to help combat dry skin.

If you think your dry skin is being caused by environmental factors, you can make simple changes like not taking as many hot showers or turning off air conditioning.

When looking for products that will help moisturise or bring relief, here’s some things to consider;

Look for:

  • Dry skin creams that help moisturise skin and protect skin from drying out.
  • Emollient bath additives (emc)
  • Products that are dermatologically tested

Avoid:

  • Avoid creams that contain potential irritants such as colour, fragrance and lanolin.
  • You should also avoid soap, which can dry your skin further. Choose a soap-free cleanser instead.
